Class Level Descriptions

Level I - Basic and Beginning classes are introductory and require no prior experience in the creative area, typically all tools and supplies are provided.

Level II - classes are for participants with SOME experience, but typically have a wide range of abilities attending, participants likely have begun to use their own tools and have preferred materials and are encouraged to bring those. For students without supplies, typically a class kit is available to purchase from our store. 

Level III - classes are for participants with significant experience looking to refine skills or develop expertise in a specific area through coaching and mentorship. Tools and supplies are not provided as part of these classes.

    By the end of the class, you should be able to write or tell a story about a time in your life or a family member's experiences fit for an essay or a performance at DoTell or a place like The Moth. 


    Instructor: Dan England works as a professional writer, journalist and storyteller, a job he's held since 1994, when he graduated from the University of Kansas. He's worked as an editor, most recently for NOCO Style, and as a teacher at Laramie County Community College. He mostly writes about the outdoors for Colorado Sun, Colorado Outdoors, Outside Magazine and Ultra Sign Up, but he also worked for 20 years for the Greeley Tribune as a columnist, features editor and storyteller. He has appeared as a DoTell! speaker and coached performers for many years.


    Skill Level: Beginner (No prior experience)

    Equipment and Materials: All tools, supplies, and materials will be provided.

    Participants will work independently between classes and be asked to present their work on the final session of class. No siginificant hazards in this class.

  • Beginning Painting on Silk

    In Beginning Painting on Silk students will get acquainted with the ancient art of silk painting by applying vibrant flowing liquid dyes to silk that is pre- stretched onto 8 inch wire hoops. We will also explore the use of a 'gutta' resist to create sharp outlines where desired. Simple color theory with three primary colors will be taught. Suggestions on how to present your final artwork will be shared. 

    Instructor: Kim Snyder says, "I have been a lifelong artist and native to Colorado. I have taught college level art classes locally, on and off through the years. For myself, creating is fun and relaxing and most often healing. And my teaching style is to allow people to express themselves in their own way whether it be through realism or abstract art."

  • Beginning Alcohol Inks: From Coasters to Landscapes

    Join me in some pure stress-free fun with alcohol inks. No experience needed. We will be working on a variety of non-porous surfaces, such as, Yupo paper, ceramic tiles, and glass Christmas ornaments, to create ethereal, wispy, flowy, artworks. You will be creating gifts for yourself or others including, coasters, ornaments to hang in a window or on a Christmas tree, and abstract art and landscapes.

      

    Instructor: Donna Clement has been a Colorado resident since moving here from New Jersey in 1981. She is a professional artist with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts In New York City in 1977 and an MA from University of Northern Colorado, 2010. She is a retired set designer/scenic artist, and muralist. Donna does her paintings in many mediums, but enjoys painting large abstract oil paintings in the style of abstract expressionism and impressionism. She is currently working as a botanical illustrator for Epic Gardening/Botanical Interests and has done so since 1994. Donna also teaches a variety art classes and teaches private lessons for the last 16 years. Donna says "My style of teaching uses patience and gentleness. I know the act of creating is beneficial for everyone’s health, as it creates serotonin in our brains. It’s wonderful to have an artwork you are proud of, but I do believe it is the act of creating that is the most important. I will be guiding you to enjoy the process and helping you create with whatever medium you choose."

    Equipment and Materials: All tools, supplies, and materials will be provided, participants will be provided aprons but may consider that fabric dyes are permanent. Respirators with new filters will be provided as well as gloves and eye protection if desired. 

    Participants will complete and take home several coasters, several ornaments, and a selection of paper works.

  • Oil Painting (Landscapes), ALL Abilities, Teens and Adults

    Beginners and experts alike will benefit from participating in this intensive landscape painting in oil paints for all levels, led by Greeley artist Daniel Augenstein. Dan will present sessions on landscape techniques, atmospheric perspective through color choices, values, and brush control, and composition. Fundamentals and techniques will be explored to push each participant through challenges helping them achieve work they will be proud of.

      

    Instructor: Daniel Augenstein, While traveling with his wife, Daniel found many new scenes to paint! In 2024, besides many trips in the USA, they visited Iceland, Scotland, Amsterdam, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rico, Panama, Columbia, and the Cayman Islands. He packed his gouache watercolor paints to produce many small works during these trips.

    Daniel has fallen in love with “plein-air” painting in oil and gouache. He has participated in many plein-air events in the western United States. At the 2024 Estes Valley Plein Air Event, he won awards at the “River Walk Paint Out” and “Best Miniature.” Many of these on-site pieces end up being references for larger studio paintings.

    For nearly 50 years, Daniel has been a teacher of art and a practicing artist in Greeley, Colorado. He is amazed by how experiments and new learning continues to reveal new “right answers” to what is art and why do we create.  Painting continues to be his passion. His work can be seen at the Lincoln Gallery in Loveland, the Madison and Main Gallery in Greeley, exhibited in national shows, and on his website, Facebook and Instagram accounts.

    Skill Level: All levels welcome

    Ages appropriate: 12 - 104 

    Min to run/Date: 5 by 9/4/2026

    Equipment and Materials: Easels, tables, chairs, and drop cloths provided for all participants. Beginners will be provided a primed11x17 stretched canvas, use of brushes, palette, palette knives, basic bulk colors, and solvents for cleanup. Intermediate and advanced students are encouraged to bring their own canvas or project, tools, and paints.

    Everyone should bring an apron and a reference photo or image to paint. More information will be provided by Dan in advance of the first class. 

    Some individuals may find the odors of paints or solvents mildly offensive, all solvents (Gamsol and Linseed Oil) are safe for travel on planes and will be used appropriately and sparingly.

    Greeley Creative District Presents: Basic bookbinding, in this class you'll be creating a journal using decorative papers, traditional materials, and techniques.

    As far back as I can remember, I have had an interest in making art and learning new ways to do it. My goal in teaching others is not just to have them reproduce a specific item, but to give them access to the tools and techniques that allow them to express their own creativity in ways unique to them. I believe this is a universal drive, and one of the things that connects us as human beings. I am always amazed at the creativity of other artists, and I hope I can inspire others to introduce their own “inner artist” to the world!

  • Screen Printing, Level I, Adults & Teens

    Learn the history and the process from the very beginning to a 11x14 (two color) finished product, using your design, and standard tools and materials of modern screen printing.


    Instructor: Sean Nichols, Stroke 14 Art, "My creative approach is to assist the artist to create the message they desire to manifest through a gratifying process that satiates the heart and mind. Facilitating the expansion of innovation, expression and understanding among the group of participants is the primary focus. The art we create is nothing less than the extension of our own existence in the fabric of time and being itself."

  • Petroglyphs, Level I, Adults

    During this Petroglyphs - "Marks Make Meaning" (Art of the Ancients) workshop participants will be exposed to the ancient cultural use of pre/para-writing systems, specifically petroglyphs, pictographs, Oghams and Nordic Runes. Visual examples and translation of the use of these art images from experts in the field will be presented and provided via electronic presentation and instructor handouts. Following the presentation, participants will engage in creating their names and/or other messages using the techniques applied by early humans who communicated in this manner.

      

    Instructor: Roger DeWitt is a professor emeritus from Aims Community College where he taught for 20 years. His specialization is Southwest Archeology, which includes the study of non-literate communication used with petroglyphs and pictographs, and in the companion European forms of Oghams (line markings) and Nordic Runes. Roger's teaching has involved students in field work and research, and he especially enjoys offering students insights, hands-on experience, and perspectives that reach far beyond a textbook.

    Hazards you may encounter: Typical low level risks involving pinched fingers if student loses control when rock tapping. Participant needs to be able to kneel or site for a brief period on or near the floor in conjunction with learning the stone tapping technique of making marks.

  • Figure Painting with Clothed Models (Any Medium), Level II, All Ages

    This workshop is designed for painters with intermediate to advanced skills. Media can be oil, acrylic, watercolor and gouache. We will use live, clothed models in the three sections of the workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about other sources for figurative artwork in the future.

  • Assemblage with Water Color, Level I, Teens and Adults

    This class will cover primary colors, laying out your paper and mixing and applying watercolor in a loose and free-flowing style. Using your abstract watercolor or gouache painting you'll explore shape and presentation of a work of assemblage using scissors and knives. Students will learn about finishing works with fixatif and gloss coatings.

    Take your bookbinding projects to new levels with this innovative techniques class. Learn advanced embellishment methods including creative closures, spine variations, decorative cover elements and a variety of text block options. You will create your own special book using your favorite options.

  • Oil Painting with Palette Knife, Level I, Adults

    Do you love those thick, textured paintings that practically beg to be touched? If you also happen to dread cleaning paintbrushes, this is the class for you! In "Knife to Meet You: Painting with Palette Knife" you'll learn about the different types of palette knives, explore a variety of techniques, and complete one or more floral paintings using those skills. Some familiarity with color theory and color mixing is helpful but not required. Students may bring their own supplies (a list will be provided upon registration) or register for the supplies-included option. I can't wait to come play with you in class!

        

    Instructor: Deb McCahan says: There is something irreplaceable about a thick, deliberate stroke of bright color — the way paint builds up on the panel, catches the light, and becomes something you want to touch. Deb paints to capture the vibrant energy of landscapes that have shaped her: the wide skies of the high plains where she grew up, and the Colorado Rockies she sees from her door every morning. By training she is a clinical microbiologist, and for more than twenty years she has taught paper crafting as a creative outlet. Now painting has become essential to how she understands and moves through the world. The challenges of the process — composition, color, the physical act of building texture — every stage feels like its own discovery. As a community-taught artist who came to the easel only seven years ago, she brings curiosity and a deep gratitude for what nature offers freely to anyone willing to look. She warmly invites fellow students to join her in exploring the textures, color, and joy that painting continues to open up for her.

    In this class students will explore color, texture, and blending using flat and round brushes.  


    Instructor: Don Lowe says, "After spending over 40 years in the classroom, I feel students need to know that there is not one right way of doing things. There’s never one right way of doing things. Creativity is an expression of individuality and the students will experience opportunities to use creativity in their own artwork."

    Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate (Some experience, building skills)
