Greeley Creative District Presents: Paper Sculpture
In this class, you will learn how to shape and manipulate paper to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Using a photograph as inspiration, you will learn how to see and interpret layers in an image, create a variety of textures and shapes in paper, and translate the image into a low-relief sculptural piece. We will also discuss ways to display your finished piece and enhance it with different lighting effects.

    Instructor: Sue Safarik

As far back as I can remember, I have had an interest in making art and learning new ways to do it. My goal in teaching others is not just to have them reproduce a specific item, but to give them access to the tools and techniques that allow them to express their own creativity in ways unique to them. I believe this is a universal drive, and one of the things that connects us as human beings. I am always amazed at the creativity of other artists, and I hope I can inspire others to introduce their own “inner artist” to the world!

Days of Nature, Color, and Probably Bug Bites

Led by your overly enthusiastic guide to all things pigment and pine trees

Hello, fellow lover of beauty, chaos, and getting grass stains on your jeans in the name of art! Do you dream of capturing the golden light bouncing off a meadow at 4:37 PM sharp? Does the idea of painting outside—yes, OUTSIDE, where the sun lives—fill you with joy and a slight sense of logistical panic? Then this two-day plein air painting workshop is for you! Join me for a creative weekend where we’ll ditch the studio walls, embrace the whims of weather and paint what we see (or what we think we see after our second cup of questionable thermos coffee). We’ll explore color theory, composition, and how to paint fast enough before a cloud covers your perfect lighting. You’ll get tips on packing a paint kit that doesn’t weigh more than a toddler and how to avoid bugs landing in your wet paint (spoiler: you probably can’t). Whether you’re a seasoned painter or someone who still calls it “that artsy brushy thing,” this workshop is designed to help you connect with nature, loosen up your brushwork, and fall madly in love with the great outdoors—all while slapping glorious color onto canvas like it owes you money. Expect laughter, sunshine (probably), and paint under your fingernails. Come for the art, stay for the sunsets. And hey—if all else fails, you’ll leave with at least two paintings, a sunhat full of memories, and a slightly smug glow from being an "outdoor artist."

Instructor: Travis Krause, after decades of teaching, guiding, and generally shepherding creative minds, Travis has fine-tuned his approach so participants don’t just emulate—they actually get their hands messy and figure things out for themselves. This watercolor workshop invites you to experiment, explore, and chase a few “what if I try this?” moments, leading you to your own artistic breakthroughs and technical confidence (happy accidents included).

Beginners and experts alike will benefit from participating in this intensive Oil Painting for all levels class, lead by Greeley artist Daniel Augenstein. Dan will present each session on topics that reinforce fundamentals and techniques then guide each participant to push through challenges and realize their full potential.

Instructor: Daniel Augenstein, While traveling with his wife, Daniel found many new scenes to paint! In 2024, besides many trips in the USA, they visited Iceland, Scotland, Amsterdam, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rico, Panama, Columbia, and the Cayman Islands. He packed his gouache watercolor paints to produce many small works during these trips.

Daniel has fallen in love with “plein-air” painting in oil and gouache. He has participated in many plein-air events in the western United States. At the 2024 Estes Valley Plein Air Event, he won awards at the “River Walk Paint Out” and “Best Miniature.” Many of these on-site pieces end up being references for larger studio paintings.

For nearly 50 years, Daniel has been a teacher of art and a practicing artist in Greeley, Colorado. He is amazed by how experiments and new learning continues to reveal new “right answers” to what is art and why do we create.  Painting continues to be his passion. His work can be seen at the Lincoln Gallery in Loveland, the Madison and Main Gallery in Greeley, exhibited in national shows, and on his website, Facebook and Instagram accounts.
