During this Petroglyphs - "Marks Make Meaning" (Art of the Ancients) workshop participants will be exposed to the ancient cultural use of pre/para-writing systems, specifically petroglyphs, pictographs, Oghams and Nordic Runes. Visual examples and translation of the use of these art images from experts in the field will be presented and provided via electronic presentation and instructor handouts. Following the presentation, participants will engage in creating their names and/or other messages using the techniques applied by early humans who communicated in this manner.
Instructor: Roger DeWitt is a professor emeritus from Aims Community College where he taught for 20 years. His specialization is Southwest Archeology, which includes the study of non-literate communication used with petroglyphs and pictographs, and in the companion European forms of Oghams (line markings) and Nordic Runes. Roger's teaching has involved students in field work and research, and he especially enjoys offering students insights, hands-on experience, and perspectives that reach far beyond a textbook.

Hazards you may encounter: Typical low level risks involving pinched fingers if student loses control when rock tapping. Participant needs to be able to kneel or site for a brief period on or near the floor in conjunction with learning the stone tapping technique of making marks.
